Severe weather or operational constraints may prohibit the operation of the
testing unit. You may call (615) 399-8995 to insure the unit is operating.
Location: The emissions testing van will be at the Farmer's Market on Stevison Ham Road (behind the
Portland Funeral Chapel). After you have
obtained your inspection certificate, you may visit the Portland Public Safety Building, 435 North Broadway,
to obtain your tags.
In order to renew tags for your car, your vehicle must pass a
yearly emissions test if:
It is a gasoline-powered vehicle 1975 or
newer with a gross vehicle weight of 10,500 pounds or less. Weight
information is located on the vehicle's door jam.
It is a diesel-powered vehicle 1975 or
newer with a gross vehicle weight of 10,500 pounds or less.
Vehicles from model year 1974 and before, electric cars, motorcycles, and
antique cars are exempt from testing.
There is one emissions testing center in Sumner County
which is located off of Highway 31-E south of Gallatin. This is across the
street from Volunteer State Community College. The address is 951
Grassland Place, Gallatin.
There are also testing stations in Murfreesboro, Franklin, Lebanon and six in
Davidson County which you are free to use.
The station in Gallatin is open from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
on Monday and Tuesday; from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday through
Friday; and closed Saturday and Sunday.
In addition to these stations, there is a van that travels around the
mid-state region to perform testing.
The van stops in Portland for a few days normally mid month. (See above
for schedule.) The van will stop at the Farmer's
Market on Stevison Ham Road (behind the Portland Funeral Chapel).
The same van also stops in Westmoreland one morning per month. It's
schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursdays. See the Portland
schedule above -- the van starts in Westmoreland on Thursday morning and moves
to Portland Thursday afternoon. The location is behind the police station
at 5300 Austin Peay Highway.
The cost for testing at any station, including the van in
Portland, is $10; cash only; no bills over $20. If you are renewing your
tags in Tennessee, you should receive a notice in the mail. You should
take this with you when you get your car inspected. If you don't
receive a notice, just take your current registration slip.
