Portland Housing Authority
The Portland Housing Authority operates 90 units of low-income public housing in Portland, Tennessee, and 30 units of public housing in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. They have housing for families, the elderly and handicapped individuals. Applications are taken at the Portland office Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Persons wishing to apply should bring proof of income and their social security cards. There is a waiting list for units, but applications are always needed as there is a fairly-high turnover rate. Renters have a choice of two payment plans: 1) a fixed 30 percent of their income, or 2) a flat monthly rate (for example, $450 per month for a four-bedroom unit). The renter may choose the one that best suits his or her budget. Units are rented in these sizes: efficiency (zero bedrooms), one bedrooms, two bedrooms, three bedrooms and four bedrooms. Not all sizes will be available at any time, and some sizes turn over much slower than others. The Portland Housing Authority was created as part of the State of Tennessee's low-income housing statutes. It was chartered in 1966. The Authority receives its funds from a combination of rent and subsidies from the State and Federal government. The Portland Housing Authority is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners who serve five-year terms. The current members are: Allen Linson (Chairman) The Portland Housing Authority is not associated in any way with the City of Portland's government with one exception: The Mayor of the City of Portland appoints the Board of Commissioners.
