Station Profile

WQKR is a community-oriented “hometown” radio station serving Sumner County (Portland, Westmoreland, Gallatin) and Robertson County (White House, Greenbrier, Cross Plains, Orlinda, East Robertson) as well as south central Kentucky (Simpson County and Franklin). Our signal is easily heard from Nashville to Bowling Green, Kentucky. We broadcast on 1270 AM, twenty-four (24) hours a day.

The focus of our broadcast day is on our morning talk show: “Good Morning, Portland,” Monday through Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 a.m. with Don Curry and Dale Sprouse. Everyone who wants to know what’s going on in the community listens to this program. Because our area has only weekly newspapers, WQKR is the only daily source of local news for area residents. Local news is aired from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the top of every hour.

The music we play is a format called “Timeless Favorites,” and consists of the top hits from the music charts between 1955 and 1995. Soft pop and rock music that everyone 35 and over can recognize or remember, and younger listeners also enjoy.

"Musical Memories and Magical Moments" with Dutch Maris is broadcast daily from noon until 1 pm. and features hits from the 40's, 50's and 60's with interesting conversation and interviews with the singers, songwriters, etc.

Because our primary goal is to serve the community, we have local news every hour along with national news, sports and a community events calendar, plus “Traders' Post” and farm market reports.

As Portland’s radio station, we are the voice of the Portland High School Panthers, and broadcast their football, basketball and baseball games and Coach’s Shows throughout the year.

We are also the only radio station in Sumner County to broadcast University of Tennessee football and basketball and Tennessee Titans’ football games.

All Portland High School football games are now streamed live on the internet as well as broadcast on WQKR. There is also a lot of interesting informat available on our website. Just go to www.wqkr.com.
