Map showing Outline of Sumner County, Tennessee

I just moved here.
What school system does my child attend?
What bus does my child ride?
When does the bus arrive?
When does my child get home from school?

These are the general rules.  As with everything in life, there are a couple of exceptions.  If there is any doubt, check past property tax bills.  Chances are very good your child will attend school in the county that's collecting tax on your home.

PUBLIC AWARENESS AND CHILD FIND
FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

(Sumner County)

Each school system in Tennessee has the responsibility of providing a free and appropriate public education for all certified children with disabilities between the ages of 3 through 21 years of age.  This includes students who are gifted, whose needs cannot be met in the regular education program.

Special education services are available in all schools in Sumner County, including the Union Year-Round School and Merrol Hyde Magnet School, for children meeting the enrollment criteria.  The Sumner County School System does not discriminate against students with disabilities.  An IEP team at the school will meet on an individual basis to determine what services a student needs.

If you know of any individual who may have a disability and is not receiving special education services, please call 615-451-5420. Someone will be glad to talk with you about possible services.  Early detection and intervention are very important.

If you think your child may have a disability, and your child is between birth and thirty-six months (age 0 to 3 years), please call Tennessee’s Early Intervention System (TEIS) toll free number, 1-800-852-7157.  This system will help families locate services for infants and toddlers with disabilities before the child reaches school age.

Homeschool Group

There is a support group in Portland for families who are currently homeschooling or who are considering homeschooling.  For more information, please call Kim Meadows at (615) 323-7647.

Donors Choose is a national, non-profit organization designed to help teachers get needed supplies for their classrooms.  Teachers submit proposals to Donors Choose, and Donors Choose reviews the requests and places them on their web site.  At this point, any individual in the world can search the database for proposals they would like to fund in whole or in part.

Once the project is fully funded, Donors Choose ships the requested supplies directly to the teacher.  The teacher sends a thank-you letter [through Donors Choose] to the donor who completed the funding on his/her proposal.  In addition, the teacher sends thank-you letters from each student along with photos of the class using the donated supplies.

It's actually quite fun to see how this works!

Donors Choose has just opened their program to teachers in Tennessee.  We encourage teachers in Portland and surrounding areas to submit proposals to Donors Choose!
