Drivers
Licenses
The closest office for issuing drivers licenses is located at 855 N. Blue Jay Way, Gallatin, TN 37066. This is off of U.S. 31-E, across from N. Harris Lane, about 0.6 miles south of the Wal-Mart store. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Starting in 2004, Tennessee has some very strict laws about who may get a drivers license and who may renew a drivers license. For a complete list of the rules and the identification you will be required to provide, please visit the State's web site: http://www.state.tn.us/safety/dlpolicy2004.htm
You may use the link below to renew your
Tennessee driver's license online. You will need to have a credit card,
your driver's license number, and your social security number. You may
renew your license if it is due to expire within the next 12 months. http://www.tennesseeanytime.org/tndlr |
Vehicle
Registration (Renewal)
If your vehicle is already registered in Tennessee, when it is time to renew, you will receive a notice in the mail.
First, you will then need to get your vehicle's emissions testing performed successfully.
You then have three choices on what to do:
Choice 1: Take your paperwork (renewal notice and emissions certificate) to the County Clerk's office in Gallatin. You will also need a check, money order or cash to pay. The amount will be approximately $75 per car. The exact amount is included with the paperwork you received in the mail. The address is:
Bill Kemp
Sumner County Clerk
355 N. Belvedere Dr., Room 111
Gallatin, TN 37066-5410
www.sumnertags.com
Choice 2: If you had your emissions test performed in Portland, you may take your paperwork to the Portland Public Safety building, and a person from the County Clerk's office will sell you your tags/stickers. This person is only available on the days that the inspection van is in Portland.
Choice 3: You may also mail all of your paperwork back to Gallatin, and your renewal stickers and/or plates will be sent to you via mail. There are instructions enclosed with the paperwork you received when it's time to renew. The address you will use is:
Bill Kemp
Sumner County Clerk
355 N. Belvedere Dr., Room 111
Gallatin, TN 37066-5410
Vehicle
Registration (New)
If you buy a car from a dealer in Tennessee, the dealer should handle the registration for you. You will receive a temporary tag, and your regular tags will arrive in the mail.
If you move into Tennessee from another state, you should take your title and registration to the County Clerk's office in Gallatin to have Tennessee paperwork and plates issued.
Bill Kemp
Sumner County Clerk
355 N. Belvedere Dr., Room 111
Gallatin, TN 37066-5410
If you buy a car from an individual in Tennessee, you should have received a certificate of title assigned to you on the back. You will also need a separate odometer disclosure statement if 1) the car is less than 10 years old, and 2) the certificate of title was issued before January 1, 1990. Take this paperwork to the County Clerk's office in Gallatin.
Change
of Address
If you move within Tennessee, you should notify:
Tennessee Department of Safety
Title and Registration Division

Nashville, TN 37243-8050
You have five choices in how to do this:
Choice 1: Preferred Method! Change your address online at: http://www.tennesseeanytime.org/tndlr
Choice 2: Send them a letter with 1) the name and drivers license of each person who is moving, 2) the old address, 3) the new address, 4) the tag number and owner's name for each vehicle.
Choice 3: Call them at (615) 741-3101 in Nashville.
Choice 4: Send a letter similar to #1 above to the County Clerk's office in the county to which you are moving. The County Clerk's office will notify the State. If you are moving into Sumner County, use this address:
