Portland was incorporated in 1905, and a few years after incorporation, it
became known as the
Strawberry Capital of Tennessee. Portland
held that distinction until the 1960s. In the following years, Portland's
agricultural identity was overtaken by industrialization, changing forever the
face of the city.
There are still many places around Portland that grow and sell strawberries. Berries usually become available around May 1 and continue to be sold to about the middle of June.
The people below have told us they sell strawberries. We highly recommend you call before visiting to make sure when their crops will be ready. The weather plays a key role in how fast strawberries ripen.
Portland also hosts the Annual Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival each May. Please click here for details.
Where to Buy Strawberries
Normally, beginning around May 1, you can find trucks loaded with strawberries parked on the side of TN52 between US31-W and I-65.
The following farms have already-picked strawberries and/or pick-your-own strawberries. We suggest you call first to make sure they still have berries.
